This entirely depends on which state you live in. How much disposable income you have to blow on gun, ammo and accessories. How many guns you plan to buy. How much training you plan o do. If you have no idea what you're doing, a shotgun.
Pump action is extremely reliable. Mossberg, Remington, or a clone of one of them. A rifled barrel can turn it into a decent HUGE caliber rifle.
12ga for men. 20ga for women and pussies.

For handguns, a revolver. If something goes wrong, the corrective action is to pull the trigger again. Speed loaders or speed strips ease reloading. .38 special/.357 magnum has plenty of available ammo. .44special/.44magnum better for bear.

Automatics are for people with training. Better if you're trained, might get you killed if you're not.

The choice between 9mm and .45 is a very difficult one.
Both are highly effective rounds that excel in different circumstances.
It really comes down to what you would prefer, knowing the target goes down on the first shot, or having more rounds in case he doesn't
