This is a stupid pop culture myth.
The real reason is found when Greece moved from still Egyptian style statues to ones depicting motion,action, sport where the blood would be in the large muscles not the dick causing shrinkage.
The switch to contraposto stances over symmetrical stance statues of Egypt saw a big dive into depicting huntrs and warriors and athletes.

I vaguely recall reading something that most statues are designed to have each muscle contracted simultaneously to exaggerate size even though that isn't possible. Apart from that they tend to anatomically correct.
