The primary voters are all too far left for a centrist candidate and the general voters are too center-right to vote for the product of a DNC primary.
2024 will be even worse because after the DNC fails SPECTACULARLY (and they're on the path to) the DSA (Democrat Socialists of America, who just had their own convention) will take it as a cue to be a legit 3rd party and actually have a large minority voting for them, unlike the Greens.
