Basically, buying a bond is the same thing as giving the government a loan, which they pay back after the term of the bond. If you loan someone money, you usually have less risk loaning it for a short period of time rather than a long period of time, because for instance they might forget or get hit by a truck or whatever. That's why the interest on a short-term bond is usually lower than the interest on a long-term bond - because the short-term bond is safer.
If the short-term bond has a higher interest rate than the long term bond (aka. the short-term bond has a higher yield because it gives you more money back), then typically people have assumed that this is because people think things will be shit in the short term so there's more risk in loaning out money for a short duration, but because things naturally get better eventually, long-term bonds remain stable. So it's basically interpreted as "the government might not be able to pay back the bond in 2 years, but obviously it won't totally collapse, and in 10 years things will be fine".
The problem with this belief is that it automatically assumes that the only reason why short-term bond yields would be higher than long-term bond yields is because bond buyers believe that the economy will be shit soon, and if they believe that then it must be true. There are other reasons why short-term bond yields might go up that high that don't involve a recession.
