That's all beside the point. Obviously a real civilization is going to have people doing things they aren't passionate about, what we're noticing here is that when people are passionate, they give of themselves freely. We don't need the sticks and carrots of incentives where love fills the human heart, where a vision of a shared, beautiful future animates the dreams of the people. It is purely the dream of wikipedia that animates the editors. Sure, if nobody else were feeding them they would still need to find food, but what does it matter that they would only subsist if circumstance forced them to subsist? The important thing is that even with their material needs met elsewhere, they yearn for something more.

The main question for how to create more of this kind of stuff, though, is what would make the average person love their civilization more? Can we really expect that abolishing private property would make anyone love their neighbors more, make them more excited for the future, fill them with ideas and work ethic for accomplishing those ideas? And even if it could do that, would it be enough to make people willingly bury their dreams to serve the greater good?

I doubt it.

Love isn't propagated on these material channels, it's not constituted of rational self-interest, you can't love your similarly waged neighbor just because you both make less than 10 million a year. Love rises from the material, but is not material. Love is hung between people like a fine web, and is shredded a thousand times more quickly than it is spun.

What can you imagine that would make you love Canada, or America, or anywhere else, enough to build your own temple there (in Minecraft) for no profit at all? What would take you beyond incentives?
