>US moves to take Iranian oil tanker from UK: Gibraltar
presstv.com/Detail/2019/08/15/603592/Gibraltar-Iran-tanker
Gibraltar says the US has applied to seize an Iranian oil tanker, which is being held in the British overseas territory, on unknown grounds, after UK media reported that the vessel’s release was imminent following a set of diplomatic exchanges between Tehran and London.

“The US Deptof Justice has applied to seize the Grace 1 on a number of allegations which are now being considered,” the Gibraltar govt said in a statement.

It added that the “matter will return to the Supreme Court of Gibraltar at 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) today."

US’s request — which was initially reported by Gibraltar Chronicle newspaper — came just ahead of a court decision in the UKterritory on whether to extend the detention of Grace 1.

On Weds night, The Sun had reported that Gibraltar’s Chief Min Picardo would not ask the judge to extend the supertanker’s detention during the court hearing on Thursday.Gibraltar Chronicle cited the top court’s chief justice, A Dudley, as saying that were it not for the US request, “the ship would have sailed.” It added that the captain and three officers of the Grace 1 have been released from arrest.

A diplomatic dispute broke out between Iran and the UK on July 4, when UK’s naval forces unlawfully seized Grace 1 and its cargo of 2.1 mil barrels of oil in the Strait of Gibraltar under the pretext that the supertanker had been suspected of carrying crude to Syria in violation of the EU’s unilateral sanctions against the Arab country.

However, reports show the confiscation took place upon a call by the US.

Tehran rejected UKs claim that the tanker was heading to Syria, slamming the seizure as “maritime piracy.”

Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization said Tuesday that Britain was expected to soon free Grace 1, after the two sides exchanged certain documents to pave the way for the supertanker’s release.

>Yemeni forces, allies shoot down Saudi-led surveillance drone in Jizan
presstv.com/Detail/2019/08/15/603585/Yemeni-forces-Saudi-Arabia-drone-Jizan

Yemen’s army and allied forces have reportedly intercepted and targeted an unmanned aerial vehicle belonging to the Saudi-led military coalition, in retaliation for the alliance’s military campaign against the impoverished country.

Yemen’s al-Masirah television network quoted an unnamed military source as saying that Yemeni troops shot down the drone as it was on a reconnaissance mission over the mountainous Jabal al-Doud district in Jizan, situated 966 kilometers south of the capital Riyadh, on Wednesday.

The source said that army forces managed to push back pro-Hadi forces advancing into Yemen, seizing a considerable amount of weapons and causing material damage to them.

In a separate development on Thursday, a Yemeni child was killed and another person was injured when artillery rounds and mortar shells launched by Saudi-backed militiamen rained down on residential buildings in Manba border district in the northern province of Sa'ada.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating military campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the aim of bringing the government of Hadi back to power and crushing the country’s Houthi Ansarullah movement.

According to a new report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, the Saudi-led war has so far claimed the lives of around 56,000 Yemenis.

The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has already said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger. According to the world body, Yemen is suffering from the most severe famine in more than 100 years.

>Chinese military personnel parade near Hong Kong border: Report
presstv.com/Detail/2019/08/15/603583/China-Hong-Kong-military-parade
Thousands of Chinese military personnel have reportedly paraded at a sports stadium in Shenzhen, a city in mainland China that borders Hong Kong.

Armored vehicles were also seen inside the stadium, with some of the personnel having armed police insignia on their camouflage fatigues, according to an AFP reporter who witnessed the event on Thursday.

The security forces moved in formation inside the stadium, while others rode around outside on motorbikes, AFP said. Dozens of trucks and armored personnel carriers could also be seen outside the stadium. On Monday, China’s People’s Armed Police assembled in Shenzhen for exercises, the state-backed Global Times newspaper said.

This comes as Hong Kong has for weeks been the scene of protests over an extradition bill that would have allowed suspects to be tried in mainland courts. The government of the semi-autonomous Chinese region has effectively backed away from the bill. Protests have persisted, nevertheless, with individuals sometimes resorting to violence and vandalizing government buildings.

Beijing, which has sovereignty over the city, has already warned that it is ready to quell the “intolerable” unrest if requested.

China has also repeatedly warned against violence. Recently, and as the protests have become more violent, Beijing has said some protesters are acting in ways that may amount to terrorism.

Hong Kong has been governed under a “one-country, two-system” model since the city — a former British colony — was returned to China in 1997.

China has said foreign countries, mainly the United States and Britain, have been provoking the protesters by issuing statements of support. Beijing has asked the two countries to stop meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs.

>Russia sends two nuclear-capable bombers close to Alaska
presstv.com/Detail/2019/08/14/603556/Russia-nuclearcapable-bombers-TU160-US-Alaska
Russia has flown two nuclear-capable TU-160 bombers to its eastern regions close to the US state of Alaska during a military drill.

According to a statement by Russia's Ministry of Defense issued Wednesday, the two Soviet-era bombers covered a distance of more than 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) in over eight hours from their base in Saratov city to Anadyr town in the Chuktoka region, located opposite to the US state.

The flight was part of an exercise that would last until the end of this week and is designed to practice transferring assets from home bases to operational airfields, the statement added.

The TU-160 strategic bomber is a supersonic aircraft that is capable of carrying up to 12 short-range nuclear missiles and of flying 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) non-stop without re-fuelling.

Russia has repeatedly used the bomber during its operations against terrorist groups in Syria.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the upgraded version of the bomber, which, according to Tupolev company, is 60 percent more effective than the older version, with significant improvements to its weaponry and navigation.

The statement came a day after two Russian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jets, convoying a plane carrying Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, chased away a NATO F-18 fighter jet that tried to shadow the military aircraft over neutral waters in the Baltic Sea.

Shoigu was returning to the capital Moscow from the Russian Baltic region of Kaliningrad, enclosed by Poland and Lithuania, on Tuesday when the incident occurred.

In footage released by the ministry, the NATO fighter jet is seen approaching Shoigu’s aircraft, whose camera filmed the F-18 up close. Moments later, one of the Su-27 Flankers chased away the intruding jet.

>Trump’s administration conflicting messages to Iran baffle go-betweens: Report
presstv.com/Detail/2019/08/15/603594/US-President-Trump-Iran-talks
Multiple American and European officials say the contradictory and conflicting messages the administration of US President Donald Trump keeps sending to Iran have complicated diplomatic efforts for American allies abroad and utterly baffled policymakers at home.

The officials involved in the disparate talks between the US and Iran told The Daily Beast on Wednesday that even the president is annoyed at the mixed signals the administration is sending to Tehran about its terms for new negotiations.

“Absolute amateur hour,” said one former senior administration official, who was involved in the internal squabbles.

The United States has for several months been actively attempting to pass messages via allies to Iran in an effort to move closer to beginning formal diplomatic talks with Tehran.

It has been leaning on mediators such as Oman, Switzerland, Japan, Iraq and France, according to two individuals involved in the behind-closed-door conversations.

However, according to two current US officials and another source with direct knowledge of the matter, diverging opinions within the Trump administration are foiling the nascent diplomatic process.

The officials told the US magazine that top Trump administration national security officials are divided about what to put on the table when it comes to negotiating with Tehran, including whether to ease a select set of sanctions, keep them in place, or suspend them altogether.

Two European officials and three individuals associated with brokering talks between Washington and Tehran said the tensions stem, in part, from President Trump’s desire to consider a new deal with Iran while some of his advisers are more reluctant to do so.

>America's Guns: Secret Pipeline to Syria
How has the international arms trade exacerbated conflict in the Middle East? People and Power investigates.
It's well known that the United States exports billions of dollars' worth of arms and ammunition to its allies. What isn't as widely understood is that many of the guns it supplies to "partner forces" fighting wars in the Middle East - particularly to rebels in Syria - are Soviet-style munitions such as RPGs and Kalashnikovs which are obtained from manufacturers in Bulgaria, Serbia and other Eastern European countries.

There are many reasons for this, of which the most obvious are that fighters in the region have long been familiar with these types of weapons and would rather use them than anything else, and they are relatively easy to obtain. Another reason is that providing guns which can't easily be traced back to the US puts a politically convenient degree of separation between the US and those to whom the arms go - even when the supplies have been sanctioned at the highest level.

At the end of last year, for example, the UK-based Conflict Armament Research found - after analysing 40,000 items recovered by its investigators along ISIL front lines between July 2014 and November 2017 - that as much as 90 percent of ISIL's vast arsenal of arms and ammunition had originated in Russia, China and Eastern European states - often as a consequence of US weapons transfers which had somehow fallen into the wrong hands.

The report concluded that by purchasing "large numbers" of European arms and ammunition and then diverting them to non-state actors in Syria without notifying the sellers, the US reportedly "violated the terms of sale and export agreed between weapon exporters ... and recipients."

Iraq's burning problem: the strange fires destroying crops and livelihoods

Fires in northern Iraq have reduced a potentially bumper harvest to ashes. The government blames mischance – but is something more sinister afoot?

theguardian.com/global-development/2019/aug/15/iraq-burning-problem-mysterious-fires-destroy-crops-and-livelihoods
Plumes of smoke shroud the summer sky of Iraq’s northern plains, creating an ominous veil of grey. Fires in Nineveh province have broken out on a scale that farmers here describe as unprecedented, turning tens of thousands of acres of wheat and barley fields into barren patches of black.

“Look at that, the livelihood of the people is destroyed,” says Jalal Muamah as he picks up a handful of charred barley spikes that pepper his field near the town of Sinjar. “We won’t have a harvest better than this year, not even in the next hundred years.”

Strong rains and a return to relative stability following Islamic State’s territorial defeat had promised to yield a bumper harvest, even raising hopes that Iraq could wean itself off its dependence on crop imports.

Iraq’s prime minister, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, said on 16 July that, despite the fires, Iraq had so far produced a record quantity of wheat, adding that only a negligible amount of crops had been destroyed. But testimonies from the ground and data obtained from local officials suggest that the impact of the fires is greater than the government admits. Duraid Hikmat, Nineveh’s director of agriculture, says his province alone had recorded 30,350 hectares (75,000 acres) of scorched crops as of 25 June, four times the figure given by the prime minister for the entire country.

While the impact of the fires is plain to see, the causes remain shrouded in mystery.

>Dozens of Saudi mercenaries killed in Yemeni missile strike
presstv.com/Detail/2019/08/14/603546/Dozens-of-Saudi-mercenaries-killed-in-Yemeni-missile-strike
Dozens of Saudi troopers and Saudi-sponsored militiamen have been killed when Yemeni army soldiers and fighters from allied Popular Committees launched an offensive against their positions in the kingdom’s southern border region of Najran.

An unnamed Yemeni military source told Arabic-language al-Masirah television network that Yemeni soldiers and allied fighters launched a domestically-developed Zelzal-1 (Earthquake-1) missile at Tayyibah al-Esm military camp on Wednesday evening, leaving dozens of Saudi mercenaries killed and injured.Separately, Yemeni forces and their allies have fatally shot 22 Saudi soldiers in the southwestern region of Jizan, located 967 kilometers southwest of the capital Riyadh, over the past two days.

Yemeni army soldiers and Popular Committees fighters had earlier shot and killed eight Saudi troopers at the Alab border crossing of Asir region.Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing Ansarullah.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the Saudi-led war has claimed the lives of over 60,000 Yemenis since January 2016.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.

>Netanyahu might block Omar and Tlaib from entering Israel, says official

Prime minister re-evaluating decision while Israeli ambassador said any member of Congress would not be denied entry

theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/15/israel-netanyahu-ilhan-omar-rashida-tlaib-visit
Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was holding consultations with senior ministers and aides on Thursday to re-evaluate the decision to allow two Democratic congresswomen to enter the country next week.

An Israeli official said they are meeting about an upcoming visit by the Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar and the Michigan representative Rashida Tlaib. The newly elected Muslim members of Congress are outspoken critics of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians and support the boycott movement against Israel. Tlaib’s family immigrated to the US from the West Bank.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said “there is a possibility that Israel will not allow the visit in its current proposed format”.

Last month, the Israeli ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer, said Israel would not deny entry to any member of Congress.

Israel often hosts delegations of US representatives and senators, who usually meet with senior Israeli officials as well as Palestinian officials in the West Bank. A decision to ban the congresswomen could further sharpen divisions among US Democrats over Israel ahead of the American elections in 2020.

Tlaib and Omar have been the target of repeated attacks by Dona Trump in recent months, including a series of racist tweets on 14 July in which the president said they should “go back” to the “broken” countries they came from. Both are US citizens and Tlaib was born in the US. The two are members of the so-called “Squad” of newly elected leftwing Democratic representatives, along with the NY representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY and the Massachusetts representative Ayanna Pressley.

And yes, the Shias say Ali and Mohammad's family cannot be shown, the Sunnis say his friends like Omar and Abu Bakr cannot be shown but then again the guys we do have are pretty interesting like Khalid ban al-walid and Mohammad's uncle Hamza(who is a houndred times more badass in the Arabic version and acting of the movie)

That is Hamza in the Arabic movie and this is him in the English one which is far less badass. Doesn't look like a guy who kills lions for the lulz
