If we were to gear production to some commissar's idea of need, rather than market signals, we would end up with a soviet style collapse.

There is no incentive for anyone to create anything that will further our standard of living under socialism, because there is no profit to be gained. The government has a monopoly on all industries and thus the whole market stagnates. People get lazy because their job and income is guaranteed regardless of their performance. What happens then? You get bread shortages, or shortages of any essential item. What happens then? Well then the state will use violence to force you to work harder. Socialism inevitably results in totalitarianism and oppression of the people.
And that's not even mentioning how the centralisation of power is very easily corrupted and you will find that the (((party members))) or other higher ups will still find themselves eating all the bread they need, while the workers get nothing.
Capitalism, or a market economy in general, is a good thing. There should definitely be some regulations to stop jews getting a monopoly over certain industries and to stop them preying on the common man, but in general it works well. People point to the current state of America as an example of how bad capitalism is, but the reality is we are basically a corporatist country and I think something like 45% of jobs are government jobs.
