It's both. I remember when I was young. Me and my father were both visiting Marbella. We went to go and watch a bull fight (it may have been in Malaga?) because it seemed like it might be interesting. Turns out they were blooding in some female toreador. She was useless, and brutalised the poor bull, failing to cleanly kill it. The professional man had to step in and execute it with honour. It was a brutal experience because of the terrible finale. I still think the tradition is important though, so only faggots and homosexuals would want to ban something intrinsic to Spanish culture.
