The Pagans believed that over time, new gods appeared and old gods weakened, and eventually new gods defeat the old. You worship whichever one(s) have the power at the time. Even the advent of Christianity in Norse and Germanic lands was seen that way. Euros were strong with Paganism, then Paganism got weak and they became strong with Christianity, now Christianity is too weak and Europe has gotten weak with it. We don't know what the next religion will be, it hasn't arrived yet.
