That makes no sense. Russia has their own side of the passage, they wouldn’t risk and all out war attempting to take control over our side. Their route takes longer, but they’ll still make a lot of money off it. Russia will be a friendly competitor, if not an ally someday.

Generally I am not in favor of America's reach extending any further than it already has, especially if the new possession would make it easier for the United States to maintain stability.
