Units of length/distance are in more helpful and easy to visualize increments. That's more valuable than being perfectly divisible by 10 into a different unit. Most road travel averages about a mile a minute for example. rooms measure in feet which is pretty close to the length of a regular man's foot.
Having a wider range of temperatures you're likely to see outdoors scalable from 0-100 has always seemed more helpful than immediately knowing how far you are from the temperature water boils at any given time.
If you say a date out loud, you'll almost always say the month first.
"March Eighth twenty-fifteen"
But volume is based off the cubic centimeter and a nanometer is based off a sepcific wavelength of light.
And the boiling temperature of water doesn't change with elevation.
