>China confirms detention of UK's Hong Kong consulate employee

Consulate worker Simon Cheng to be held for 15 days by Shenzhen police, says the Chinese foreign ministry.
aljazeera.com/news/2019/08/china-confirms-detention-uk-hong-kong-consulate-employee-190821082845664.html
A Chinese national working at Britain's Hong Kong consulate has been detained in China's border city of Shenzhen for violating the law, the Chinese foreign ministry has confirmed, in a move that appears likely to worsen already strained ties between Beijing and London.

Speaking at a daily news briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Simon Cheng had been detained for 15 days by the Shenzhen police.

Cheng did not return to work on August 9 after travelling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen the previous day, Hong Kong news website HK01 reported on Tuesday, citing an interview with his girlfriend and family.

Geng said Cheng was being held for breaching public security management regulations, giving no further details, and added that the matter was entirely a Chinese internal affair on account of the latter's Chinese citizenship.

His announcement came after the United Kingdom's Foreign Office said on Tuesday it was "extremely concerned" by HK01's reports, which identified Cheng as a trade and investment officer at the Scottish Development International section of the consulate.

Cheng's family later confirmed his disappearance in a Facebook post on Tuesday night, saying he travelled to Shenzhen on the morning of August 8 for a business trip.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong police confirmed it had received a report on August 9 about a British Foreign Office employee who has been missing since crossing into China on a business trip.

>Explosion rocks arms depot north of Iraq's Baghdad

Blast latest in series of explosions targeting sites belonging to groups under umbrella of Popular Mobilization Forces.
aljazeera.com/news/2019/08/explosion-rocks-arms-depot-north-iraq-baghdad-190820171200992.html
A blast has hit an arms depot belonging to Iranian-backed paramilitaries north of Baghdad, according to media reports.

The site struck on Tuesday is close to the Balad Air Base, which hosts US forces and contractors and is located about 80km north of the Iraqi capital, in the Salahuddin province.

The explosion is the latest in a series of mysterious blasts in recent weeks, targeting bases and warehouses belonging to groups under the umbrella of militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Some have been blamed on drone attacks, others on faulty storage.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Tuesday's explosion.

A military official told Reuters news agency the intended target was the militia's position near the base, while a paramilitary source said his group's weapons depot was specifically targeted by an aerial bombardment.

Witnesses told Reuters the explosion caused stored rockets to fly into nearby orchards and into Balad base itself.

Separately, a police source told Reuters news agency that the cause of the explosion was still unclear, adding that two fighters were killed and five were wounded.

Last week, at least one person was killed and 29 others wounded after homes were damaged by an explosion at a weapons depot in Baghdad.

Police at the time attributed the explosion to poor storage and high temps, but a government investigation is under way.

Last week, Iraqi Prime Minister Mahdi banned unauthorised flights throughout the country.

Some analysts have suggested the strikes might have been carried out by Israel, which last year signalled that it could attack suspected Iranian military assets in Iraq, as it has done with scores of air raids in Syria.

>Fresh clashes between separatists, government in Yemen's south

Fighters from Security Belt militia take two government military bases in Zinjibar, in Abyan province, officials say.
aljazeera.com/news/2019/08/fresh-clashes-separatists-government-yemen-south-190820143248635.html
UAE-backed separatist fighters have seized a number of military camps in Yemen's southern Abyan province, as fresh clashes with forces loyal to the country's internationally recognised government caused multiple deaths and injuries.

The two sides are nominal allies in a Saudi-UAE-led military coalition battling the Houthi rebel movement after the latter took over the capital, Sanaa, and most major cities in 2014.

But earlier this month the so-called Security Belt militia, of the pro-secession Southern Transitional Council (STC), broke with the government and seized its temporary base of Aden. The United Nations said at least 40 people were killed in several days of fighting in Aden, which has functioned as the seat of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's government.

Amid escalating tensions, the Security Belt on Tuesday overran a military camp belonging to the government's special forces in Zinjibar, about 60km east of Aden in Abyan province, and deployed across much of the city, unidentified officials and residents told The Associated Press news agency. The clashes killed at least three civilians and wounded nine, AP reported.

Separately, Abyan Governor Abu Bakr Hussein told AFP news agency that the separatists had also seized a nearby military camp at Al-Kawd, forcing out the 350 troops there.

At least four military personnel - two separatists and two government troops - were killed and 23 wounded in the fighting, Hussein said, adding that 1,100 troops had been stationed in Zinjibar.
'Unjustified escalation'

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is Saudi Arabia's main partner in the military coalition against the Houthis, but it has trained and equipped the separatists.

>China threatens sanctions over sale of US fighter jets to Taiwan

The United States has approved the sale of 66 advanced F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan. The sale adds to already tense relations between Beijing and Washington.
dw.com/en/china-threatens-sanctions-over-sale-of-us-fighter-jets-to-taiwan/a-50113242
China threatened to sanction US companies involved in the sale of weapons to Taiwan on Wednesday after the United States approved an $8 billion (€7.2 billion) arms deal to the island.

The US State Department on Tuesday approved the sale of 66 Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets, 75 G E engines and other parts and accessories following another military sale to Taiwan last month.

The proposed sale comes as ties between USA and Beichingk are strained over a tit-for-tat trade war and geopolitical competition on the Asia-Pac region.

Chink's FM said the proposed arms deal constituted interference in its internal affairs and undermined its sovereignty and security.

"China will take all necessary measures to safeguard our interests including imposing sanctions on the US companies participating in this arms sale to Taiwan," FM spokesman Shuang said at a news briefing.

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to one day reunite the island with the mainland, even with the use of force. The Chink military regularly enters Taiwan's air space and sends warships to the area in a show of force.New air force and defense capabilities

Taiwan already has a fleet of older F-16s purchased in 1992 that has undergone upgrades.

Under the proposed sale, Taiwan would get the advanced F-16 Block 70/72, which includes many technologies not present in earlier models.

Taiwanese Pres Ing-wen said the purchase would help the country develop a new air force and boost air defenses

"With strong self-defense capacity, Taiwan will certainly be more confident to ensure the cross-strait and regional peace and stability while facing security challenges,"

>Houthis shoot down US military drone over Yemen – reports
A US military MQ-9 drone was shot down in Yemen’s Dhamar governorate, southeast of the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa, Reuters reported two US officials as saying on Wednesday.

The officials confirmed that the drone was shot down late on Tuesday.

A Houthi military spokesman had earlier been quoted by the rebels’ Al-Masirah TV as saying that their air defenses had brought down a US drone.

In June, the US military said that Houthi rebels had shot down a US government-operated drone “with assistance from Iran.”

US forces have occasionally launched drone and airstrikes against Yemeni group Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

Zionists and european nazis have an excellent working relationship. Zionists support nazis to ferment anti semitism, which in turn legitimizes Israels argument whenever they are criticized (ANTI SEMITES REEEEEE). True, but they got natsocs and people who think like natsocs (you know the retarded type that loves hitler but unironically believes right wing populists will change something) in their support base.

Oh my god...

I've been reading about the Houthi shia sect and what I'm getting is that they're called by their religion to proclaim a caliphate. Is that right?

Voting for them won't lead to the ethnostate, but at least they won't shit the bed quite as hard.

Amerimutts just can’t catch a break!

Imamate. zaydi 5er are called not to recognize or even pragmatically make peace with any type of oppressive caliphate. 12er are allowed taqiyyah and hide, or make peace to survive, but zaydi are not. imam zayd ibn ali died in open rebellion against a tyrannical state and actually coined the term 'rafidah' in a shia context as he did not reject the 1st or 2nd caliphs, explaining to those attacking him 'i was not one of the rejectors (rafidah)..' an incredibly central part of sunni condemnation of 12ers. for this reason, zaydi 5ers also do not reject 1st or 2nd caliph, and do not deal in taqiyyah.

yemen's zaydi history of imams also had a long civil war period where the stronger imams would dominate the lesser to unite the northern state, resulting in the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen and its Imam-Kings.

So there's a chance a Houthi Yemen state could be established as an imamate? Their immamate used to be a kingdom beforehand, though.

For real this time?

Bosni is patient with reporting so it could be legit this time.

youtube.com/watch?v=zolYWDtHI68

Attached: 1448336769882.jpg (1462x1462, 315K)

Since the death of his father in 1996, Ageel bin Muhammad has been the head of the royal Hamid ad-Din lineage. He uses the title Saif al-Islam ("Sword of Islam"), which was formerly carried by the Crown Princes of Yemen.

So if Houthis are given independence, they'll proclaim a kingdom?

/ug/ when???

They have many options. The Houthis were founded as a Zaydi study group summer camp. They further developed into a powerful light infantry after being targeted by Ali Abdullah Saleh, George Bush, and the Sa'ud. The Arab Spring under Hadi defeated AAS, and Obama defeated Bush, but Houthi light infantry units moved into the capital, seizing government buildings and forcing the resignation of Hadi.

Hadi fled to Aden and recanted where a governor gave him solace: Aidroos al-Zubaidi. Later Hadi tried to dismiss him to remove the challenge to his rule. Which brings us to today, Zubaidi moving light infantry into the capital, seizing government buildings, and removing recognition of Hadi.

They have already appointed presidents, like Sammad who died whose name is a weapon now, have half the General People's Congress still backing Abdulmalik al Houthi. They are within rights to declare imamate on the religious consensus generated by their Zaydi study group, which is heavily influenced by Qom, but what is more likely is some kind of mixed democracy like Iran or Gaddafist Libya, with a revolutionary guardian executive presiding over a mixed clerical-people's democracy.

Further, the old king fought a war with the Yemen Arab Republic during the latter's creation, was backed by Saudi Arabia versus YAR's Egypt, somewhat won, but KSA recognized the YAR anyway and the king went into voluntary exile in London, leaving KSA for it. Thus the pretender. So royalist overtones would have to deal with that complicated history as well.

When is the arab identity going to die? Syrians Lebanese iraqis have barely anything in common with Saudis and yemenis, and gulf Arabs are just Iranians in disguise. Arabians don’t even view Syrians and others as real Arabs, it’s a retarded idea to begin with. 4,000 years ago the Lebanese, iraqis, Egyptians, etc all had impressive ancient cultures and mythology. Meanwhile the Arabs weren’t even relavent until 640AD.
I put levantines, Egyptians, and iraqis in the same civilizational level as Persians, whereas Arabs are significantly less impressive. Their only achievement was conquering Mesopotamia and Iran. From there on out, all of the main achievements of Islam came from there, not from Arabia. I’ve been to KSA and it’s a dirty shithole full of fanatics and retards. Iraqis have more in common with Iran so this idea of Arab solidarity makes no sense to me when said Arabs are the reason these nations got destroyed by war and Daesh.

Thanks for the detailed clarification.

Born Bruce Chalmers in San Juan Capistrano, California, Chalmers was orphaned and put up for adoption. As a young boy, he was an avid stamp collector, and wrote to the Imam (King) of Yemen, asking for local postage stamps for his collection. His reply came from the Imam's young son, Muhammad al-Badr, which started a lifelong friendship between the two.

He joined the US Army, serving in the 82nd Airborne in North Africa during the Second World War. He was later posted to Japan where he studied Japanese, but his true passion remained the Arab world. Following his discharge from the army, he moved to Beirut to study Arabic with the assistance of the G.I. Bill and changed his name to Conde.

As his correspondence with al-Badr continued, he received an invitation to visit the country. After relocating to Sana'a, Yemen, Conde renounced American citizenship and converted to Islam in 1958. He was granted Yemeni citizenship and a passport. Conde convinced the Imam that Yemen could make money selling postage stamps to collectors and was placed in charge of the country's philatelic office, which eventually caused some friction between Conde and the Minister of Communications. Conde was accused of espionage and expelled from the country and his passport revoked. Without travel documents, he spent three weeks in the Cairo Airport before moving to Beirut where he became a correspondent for Linn's Stamp News.

Conde eventually found himself invited to the tiny emirate of Sharjah, where he established a post office and again taught the country how to generate revenue from the sale of postage stamps to collectors. In gratitude, the government of Sharjah issued him a passport.

Following the overthrow of the Imam of Yemen in 1962, Conde returned to Yemen and enlisted with Royalist forces in the North Yemen Civil War. He eventually rose to the rank of General, while in the meantime overseeing the production of Royalist Yemen postage stamps, which helped to raise funds for the cause.
