There are two definitions of "socialism" that I am aware of.

Definition 1) Anything done by the government, or any distribution of resources which is not purely free-market.
This is a strawman cartoon definition which has been employed by Conservatives and Libertarians to associate any Democrat policies with Socialism and therefore Communism. Liberals a lot of times will adopt this definition, in order to sell socialism as something moderate.

Definition 2) The government controls the means of production.
This is the real definition. In Europe "Socialist" parties all want to seize major industries. The banks, the housing market, even the grocery stores. These parties are very unpopular in Europe, considered very fringe. This is the system they have in Venezuela and Nicaragua, which are run by openly "socialist" parties who state all of this as their mission.

American political discourse is very dishonest like this, because of the huge media propaganda machines that exist. At least Europeans have things labelled correctly.

Due to rapidly dwindling off-shore oil reserves Norway maintains a vanity surplus worth over $30,000 per person in the country that it could either give to them directly or relax their rapacious tax rates while still providing the same level of services but they'll never do either. How is that a good thing?

People that advocate for more government often (and often deliberately) mistake the success of individual/groups of people with the success of government. The fact that the Scandinavian countries have little crime, are clean etc. is not some product of bureaucrats pontificating to the savage masses of grugs, it's the little choices people make every day in their interactions with eachother and their environment.

The nanny-states of Europe would not survive a 60 year "Refugee Crisis" and legal immigration levels that've seen the U.S.' population double, including 30 million illegal immigrants (more than there are people in general in these Scandinavian countries). They would not survive an obesity crisis driven by the many people on the lower end of the bell curve, and they wouldn't survive 13% population being responsible for 50% of some of their more pressing social problems.

Get rid of the 1965 Higher Education Act forcing colleges to scramble to make their tuitions affordable or rightly be shuttered, call Europe's bluff and make them manufacture their own drugs instead of selling to them at a loss and cap immigration and many of the worst of our problems would sort themselves out within 10 years.

There are no socialism in Scandinavia. Socialism is literally about who owns the means of production and whether private property exist or not.

When the government provides a service it will always cost more than if the private sector did it. the government will ALWAYS be less efficient which means in the end the average citizen is paying a lot more for that service they just don't notice it because it's coming out of their taxes. When your talking about services that will be providing for 330 million people being inefficient is not sustainable and will result in some form of new tax to help pay for it.

That is only for norway; there are still 3 other countries using the nordic model with finland to a lesser extent. The nordic model is not socialism, Sweden in the '70s had a short stint of socialism but abandoned it. The nordic model is social democracy, where there are high levels of free trade and private ownership with a large welfare state that regulates capitalism to the social good.
