He did not need to go to war over Poland. Hitler would have been in an infinitely better position geo-politically if he had simply shed light on the atrocities being committed against German speaking famillies in Poland and demanded their compensation and immediate relocation to Germany. Going to war over Poland and forcing Britain and France's hand (or, rather, giving Churchill exactly what he wanted) was so asinine, it's hard to imagine it wasn't planned in some way.
