And even if they did, voter priorities being what they are, they wouldn't have a mandate to pursue independence and fundamentally change the nature of the country when the majority of their MPs are voted in based on their economic or healthcare plans.

If you try to hamfist a referendum through after an election where independence polled almost last among issues, you're setting yourself up for failure. Much better to wait for a more ripe time.

In the eyes of people that want political independence, yes, but in the eyes of others, the aim is merely financial independence. I imagine most of the US states that operate on a net minus as compared to other states would love to be financially independent but not necessarily secede from the union.

And it's a sad thing to behold. New business and diversification of the economy is great but not if it comes at a price of surrendering your state to corporations with more employees than your population.
