They drop him back into the jungle to photograph some POW camps they thought to be empty, so they could go back home to Congress and show them "we tried, couldn't find anybody, the end". They send him in in a black op, to document the non-existence of American POWs and instead he spergs out full glory and brings a bunch of POWs back in a chopper and raise all hell. It's a good movie. In Rambo III, he fights the Russians as an ally to the Afghan mujahideen; to whom the movie is dedicated; pretty ironic considering that those same warriors were allied with on Osama Bin Laden and would later become The Taliban.

Bin Laden was only informed that there would “potentially be a plane hijacking” similar to the tons of hijacked planes every year by Palestinians or Libyans etc. The Taliban knew nothing. Al Qaedi at that time was actually planning an attack on a US advisor camp in Pakistan and was caught pretty offguard by 9/11. Their secret bases were in Pakistan but during 9/11 they were in Afghanistan for meetings with certain Taliban leaders.
