Modern Egyptians are not Ancient Egyptians. They call themselves Arabs now, speak Arabic, write in Arabic, and practice Islam predominantly.
Egypt has been steadily blacked for 2000 years, since the Romans took it over.

Good question. There are two possible answers to this.
The Arab expansion began before Islam was created. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries Yemeni Arabs had to migrate to different lends due to dense population, in following centuries some Arabs were persecuted due to accepting Judaism so they also migrated North. This migrations resulted in Arabs establishing themselves in Jordan and Southern Iraq, but every Arab nonetheless had his origin in Yemen and South-Western Saudi Arabia. Modern Yemenis have significant SSA admixture and I assume so did the ancient Arabs. The SSA admixture in Arabian Arabs however is often exaggerated, but it is still there at around 10%. The SSA admixture in Egyptians however is slightly higher at around 15%, which is most likely due to admixture from Nilotic tribes. So the Negroid features in Egyptians might be a result of a mix of SSA from Arabs and SSA directly from SSA.
What I think is more probably however is that the phenotype of Egyptians is actually more similar to an ancient group called Basal Eurasians than to Negroids. I think that curly hair and this pigmentation is also from these Basal Eurasians. If curly hair wasn't connected to Basal Eurasians, then its frequency would be far less in the Middle East, as SSA admixture in the ME and NA is often exaggerated.

And in regards to some mutts being similar to them, this is just a coincidence. Mutts have a pretty large range of phenotypes as they are mutts, NA and Arabia already has a "standardized" phenotype. Some mutts look like Meds, some like Arabs, some like Negroid Albinos.

Egypt stretches from the southern Sahara to the Mediterranean, so obviously people moving up and down the Nile over thousands of years are are a mixed bunch. Some are really dark, some are really light, most of them are something like Salah.

The middle (English definition) and working classes were not so much. They owned farms and worked them. They either married similar cultural families of the same standing or neighboring farms within the same state/county, this went on for thousands of years in all corners of the globe.

1) Egypt was under Arab, North African and Turk control for over a thousand years
2) The african slave trade was these Empire's biggest cash cow, it never stopped no matter who came to rule
3) Every african slave passed RIGHT through Egypt
4) Egypt was a constant battleground, egyptian men were decimated by countless wars, famine, diseases and forced population displacement
And now
5) Egypt was colonized by arabs, north africans, turks, iranians
5.5) These men did not bring women with them.
6) African male slaves were sterilized or were not allowed to breed. African women were allowed, converted or not.
7) Men in egypt almost all had african female maids, workers, wives, prostitutes, harems.
The SSA admixture in Egyptians is maternal, not paternal. Google that.
