My conundrum with this:
Yeah, the empire showed Britain’s power, and a lot changed positively because of that. At the same time, the empire helped to bankrupt the country, especially after wars, and its subjects ended up trying to take over.
Now that America has picked up much of Britain’s mantle, it looks like we’re making similar mistakes. We also lost our aloofness from imperialism, the thing which caused other nations to trust us and cooperate with us in the first place. With all the endless wars to maintain it, has our bid to be a superpower really been worth it in the end? Would it have been better to stick to our hemisphere? I don’t think it’s a stretch of the imagination to think that much of the American population would deem those who would want the US to withdraw from its overextended outposts as traitors. That doesn’t seem right... my two cents anyway.
