People don't understand what a tree is. They think the whole trunk is a living organism. The living part is actually just the roots, bark, leaves and a small part of the underlying tree. Trees grow by producing new tree to parasite the older tree (which makes the inner wood inedible). If the trees just grow for centuries it reduces the space available for trees to grow as more and more space is taken up by dead wood.
But sure. Keep fucking with the environment when you know nothing about the processes involved. These 'green' initiatives have caused more damage to the environment than simple restraint ever did.
