That's the way our agricultural system is designed. The government pushed the market in a certain direction by subsidizing certain crops. If you're not growing those crops, it's extremely difficult to make it as a farmer.

The real issue with farming is that food production is TOO efficient, between crop rotation GMO and simple selective breeding between the United States and Canada if we really wanted too we could drown the world in cheap produce. I think the problem is the sudden shift in the market. Farmers could have adapted and started growing different crops. There was no warning though, they weren't given adequate time and have been completely screwed over by the trade war.
