Christians cannot adopt even moderate socialism under the pain of finding themselves outside the faith.

Christian Socialism can and should only be considered a viable option in individual communities that are not governed nor participating in an outside, secular body.
The ideals and practices of the Christian community would have to be the central focus of everyday life. As a 'system' of governance for a pluralistic nation, it is completely untenable because Christianity, at its core, is anti-state.
Monasteries are a good example. They live in a separate community that abides wholeheartedly to a specific set of ideals of the Christian life but does not wish to govern or proselytize their way of life outside of their walls. That is the only viable form of Socialism the Christian should accept. Without a group of people committed to that set of ideals, you're bound to have leeches and people desiring to exert power of others, which is, obviously, anti-christian.

Don't even count on it, the Christeros war happened and the government went around killing entire families and clergy members for failing to abandon the faith. Christianity is against the state taking absolute power concerning it's teaching of natural rights and how it is disorder against the community for the government to consolidate private property for itself.

Except Christianity promotes Charity, not state-mandated wealth distribution. It's not Charity if you're being forced to give to someone under penalty of imprisonment, it goes entirely against the scripture.

It is not and can not be a supported system of governance outside of communities that are not filled entirely with individuals that are committed to ANOTHER set of ideals that would prevent the abuse of power. Socialism on a national scale is unsupportable from a Christian perspective because it will inherently produce persons that rise into power and abuse their position, more than likely leading to violence against groups that do not entirely support that over-exertion of power, such as Christians.
