I've done a little undergrad work on salmonella, specifically to try to combat conventional antibiotic resistant strains of salmonella typhimurium. This is sort of scary stuff, considering how far along some of the research is. The people leading the research have had some success, but it's not that close to be scaled up to a commercial level. A rush (massive hype and attention via deaths) may change that, but if there's a breakthrough with it, I would estimate about 15 plus years until commercial availability of any of this.

Cellular structure isn't a valid target for attack due to the mechanism of infection.
