There is actually a very good long term outcome out of this unholy alliance PD-M5S: they will be the ones in charge when Italy will be submerged with new taxes, immigrants and austerity.
Salvini at the opposition will watch, learn from his mistakes and profit. The M5S voters will never forgive the party for being allied with PD, their literal natural enemy. PD itself will be destroyed from the inside by Renzi and his cronies. Renzi just refuses to understand he had his chance and fucked it up, he's immensely unpopular. One more year of suffering and Salvini will easily top 40 percent of the votes and be able to rule alone.
I'm not happy about how things turned out but this is an opportunity to get rid of M5S and PD once for all.

-Zingaretti, the new leader of PD, wants new elections in order to purge the party from Renzi and his cronies -M5S know it and put impossible demands specifically on the table to damage PD as much as themselves -M5S will collapse regardless of what they end up doing: projections put the party under 15 percent as of now, I can imagine an alliance with PD will make them almost disappear under 10 -other conservative parties are just watching and laughing as their votes grow from doing nothing -new very important regional elections are coming: PD could end up losing all their remaining key regions, and allying with M5S makes it almost certain. For the left, losing Emilia and Lazio to Lega would be like losing California and New York to Blumpf himself.
