I actually got started as an ED editor before I was going to Jow Forums. That was like 2007 or 2008. I was one of the newfags that learned chan culture through ED. I lurked /b/ for over a year before I ever posted.
I helped with a bunch of minor stuff but I did some work with the Lulz albums

If your site is massive you end up using something such as cloudflare to stay afloat and depending on how much you want to crutch yourself you could even build performance enhancing tasks on their infrastructure which ends up crippling you when you go offline. IMO they could be running in a limited mode but for whatever reason are deciding not to / get DDOSed to death each time
