I was able to examine real time weblogs for a few medium sized twitter users and correlate that to the engagement rates twitter advertises. I'm really not kidding, you would see a tweet twitter claims had 500 engagements and dozens of link clicks, and I could conclusively prove that all were robots. This doesn't even get into automated botnets and covert influence, which twitter policy specifically allows.
