Like most young people and persons who have no sense of nuance you are falling into the trap of thinking in absolutes. Are there pits out there who if raised properly by an extremely qualified person will be mostly indistinguishable from normal dogs? Yes. Are there pits who despite training will still randomly flip out and injure or kill? Also yes. The difference is that the first case is much rarer than the second case because they are an inherently aggressive breed that was selected for fighting capabilities over many many years. Even when controlling for statistical variables such as low skilled owners and poor environments pits still have a vastly disproportionate number of attacks and deaths attributed to them that cannot simply be dismissed as 'poor upbringing'.

LOL hilariously enough the first time I ever encountered pits I was a kid and knew nothing about them, but my first impression even back then was "damn something seems off about this dog". Pits do not have that natural calm or warmness that other dogs have. Instead they have a sort of feeling of being perpetually wound-up like a spring that in under tension waiting to go off. Even if they are familiar with you or if they are young and you are just slowly petting them they give off a vibe, a sort of undercurrent of hostility. I've long since left childhood behind me but I've seen enough pit attacks since then to confirm my suspicions about them. Whether it's a pit that escaped it's leash or a pit in the park passing by another dog or a pit in the home that encounters a guest its not familiar with, it doesn't take much to set them off. And once they get set off they don't easily get calmed down.

If you don't want them chasing cats redirect that energy elsewhere by throwing a ball, frisbees, etc. Training for a negative (don't chase that) is harder than training for a positive (come, do this, etc). Redirecting behaviors is a lot easier than removing them.

Here for example I can tell you exactly why the pit attacked and why you see this type of behavior whenever they are in packs. All it takes is the slightest display of weakness or a show of something being vulnerable or picked on by the pack (people throwing water on her) and it will set them off. In the pits mind it is simply helping the pack cull a weakling, it's hyper aggressive nature does not allow it to see that the act was merely play and not a serious life and death encounter.

Once again you can see the moment when they decide to strike is when the cat displays fear towards them and instead of simply moving on they feel compelled to attack. Even when the owner is pulling against them and shouting, even when the owner is physically trying to separate them from the cat they continue the attack. Normal dogs don't do that (normal dogs will also kill cats don't get me wrong but not as frequently as pits) they will either defer to their master, move on, or chase the cat till it runs off, or even if they bite it a swift kick and a shout are usually enough to let a normal dog know to cut that shit out. But not pits, because they don't care, because they were bred to fight and kill.

Nah, worked in an animal shelter in the south and it's mostly bullshit - the one thing that's absolutely true is they will tear the FUCK out of small animals, including small dogs, because their prey drive is insane. Otherwise, they're a lot nicer to people than a lot of other breeds. Especially chihuahuas. Fuck chihuahuas.

The issue is always the owners, and their absolute neglect of care because they just want BIG STRONG DOG. They'll willingly egg them on into biting people as a puppy because AWWW HOW CUTE, and then are mortified when their adult, 60+lb dog is mauling some random bystander who runs away from a giant fucking tank barreling toward them wanting to play. They're still animals, and need to be trained. They just happen to be particularly strong animals.
