Honestly, even if you're gonna presume that, then it's still not weird considering that it was reported for HOURS beforehand that the building was on fire and was about to collapse. And then shortly before it DID collapse the building owner gave the order for the fire department to evacuate and just let the thing go. So it was reported to all news outlets that it was GOING to collapse long before it did. No surprise there and all other news outlets reported it. So again, it would fall under the category of someone just mildly misspeaking or getting some crossed information on the single biggest and most confusing newsday of the 21st century as it unfolded live. Again the most you can generate of a mass would be the amount of floors above it as it broke down, which is not that much of a weight to have been leaned over on it's side while it fell, and then it pulverized the section.

They made the mistake of leaving it to lean and when that top section fell over it then collapsed the whole building underneath?

Impossible, and at most you would have 10 - 20 floors of compression damage and a ton of steel hanging over from the top sections falling onto them
