There's this weird thing people do, where someone uses a word or phrase, and everyone pretends like they're very familiar with it, and that it's bizarre that anyone didn't know it. I notice that left-wingers do this a lot more than right-wingers. It's a perfect case of pretentiousness, since it's based on maintaining a false pretense to make other people feel stupid, or to seem smarter than you really are.

I'm in my 40s. I've heard "category [number]" hurricane many times in my life, but I don't know what the number means, and can't remember which one was used for what. Until I looked it up just now, I didn't know what system of categorization they were referring to. I think this is pretty typical for someone who doesn't live in a hurricane zone. You'd think they'd at least say, "category five on the Saffir–Simpson scale".

Anyway, I'm reminded of the Gary Johnson "What is Aleppo?" incident. That was a straight-up kneecapping. Instead of straightforwardly answering the question in a civilized way, with "In Syria." (they hadn't been talking about Syria, so there was no context), the interviewer fired off a dump of all the information about Aleppo without letting Gary get a word in edgewise, implying that he hadn't known any of it and was basically unaware there was even a war in Syria. And of course, the buzz was all over the place, "What an idiot! He didn't know about Aleppo!" That was certainly the first time I had ever heard of Aleppo, and I think it was the first for most of people on the "what an idiot" bandwagon. Imagine thinking that every presidential candidate needs to know the name of every town in every conflict zone. The same shitheads feed their preferred candidates prepared questions, so they can pretend to have detailed knowledge of everything off the tops of their heads.

If there's a democratic solution, it's not through standard party politics. A new grassroots effort is needed. But they've flooded our countries with human garbage, and extended the franchise to women and people who depend on the state for their livelihood. The real fix is probably not democratic.
