Kick the Islam out of the equation and it is either Croat, either Serb, or divided between both.

that's not true though. bosnia had a mostly distinct religious identity even before the turks came. the majority of medieval bosnians were followers of the church of bosnia, a heretical church denounced both by the serb orthodox and the catholic church (see the bosnian crusade). orthodoxy was mostly present in eastern bosnia and herzegovina (even though stjepan kosača was himself a follower of the church of bosnia) whereas catholicism became a factor in bosnia only with the latter kotromanić kings and after the introduction of franciscan communities (and in what is now bosnian krajina, but that region was never part of the medieval kingdom). the ethnic origin of bosnians is a far more complicated question though.
