None of the Church fathers in late antiquity never even used 2 Maccabees to justify purgatory. The exegesis on 2 Maccabees connecting the prayers for the dead Jewish soldiers to prayers for the souls in Purgatory came in the Middle Ages.
The early Church fathers pointed out 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 as showing that there are some that die, do not go to Heaven, and do not get damned. They take the phrase "they will be saved, but through fire" to mean that lesser sins are being cleansed from the soul of post-death Christians before entering Heaven. This is a belief of Christians in late antiquity. They didn't call it purgatory, as the noun purgatorio appeared later, but this idea was nearly universal to all Christians at the time (except those that denied that any Christians were damned), and was functionally the same as what we call Purgatory.
