IIRC, the MLRS used in that scene were real. The military happened to need the training and jumped at the chance to level a village. Shame that it was filmed in Kazakstan and the geography was just a bit off.

And somehow military think tanks today somehow conveniently forget America giving the best weapons and tech to Mujahideens during the Soviet-Afghan war when fighting insurgencies in the Middle East.
