Nintendo does not have as strong of a foothold in Europe because the NES released over there was licensed out and manufactured by another company. Who did a shitty job of it, creating a very bad first impression. By the time Nintendo entered the European market proper it was too late damage to their brand was done, they've never quire recovered from that in Europe.
