The current system for young drivers is draconian, arbitrary and DESIGNED to keep young drivers off the road to their detriment.

Years ago the media drilled into the public that young drivers on the road are a disaster waiting to happen, that they are drink driving, reckless speed demons that must be dealt with at all costs and eventually they got their way, 120 HOURS supervised driving in Victoria just to be able to drive solo, and once you even manage to pass there are a host of conditions for P1&2, can't have peer age passengers, can't tow etc, don't get me wrong, young drivers are at high risk for accidents, but these ridiculous rules solve none of that, apart from keeping kids off the road and looking good in road toll statistics, next thing there are articles like this news.com.au/finance/economy/australian-economy/cars-no-more-a-symbol-of-freedom-for-young/news-story/0e122c69d7a175fbef1e14618606790e
pondering on the decreasing number of youngsters driving nowadays, yeah, NO S**T YOUNG PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO DRIVE, they don't want to bother going to the effort of finding an instructor who can hold their hands through 120 hours of driving, because it turns out not every teen has parents who can spare the time to tutor their kids, or even the money to afford driving lessons, of course the idea of driving will take a backseat in their minds, they have better things to worry about.

If you are wondering why i'd say that the current licensing is designed to keep young drivers off the road, it's because not only do your required logbook hours magically get reduced down to 40 once you turn 21 (in Vic), but every year our government happily lets hundreds of thousands of foreigners in this country drive with an overseas licence, some of which SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING with how bad their proficiency is, completely exempt from our regulations, but no, of course it's the DANGEROUS and RECKLESS young drivers we need to stop, of course the same people who implement these laws and I will expect call me out for whining and complaining in this thread are of the same generation never had to put up with any of this, who could right off the bat drive solo, they will simply brush it off as being necessary for safety, well, to that i ask, what is the price of safety? when you miss a job opportunity because you don't have a licence, when you live in a rural area where public transport is non-existent, when you miss out on that flexibility and convenience of being able to drive, when you miss out on the freedom in general that comes with being able to drive a car?

Getting my license in rural SA was a nightmare. The only way to get the necessary hours was with highway driving which meant I wasn't getting enough practise around traffic. Ended up blowing hundreds of dollars on a shitty instructor until I was confident enough to pass the test. Then cost over $100 to actually get the license.
