For centuries an empire or group of empires has ruled the muslim world. Post WW1 the europeans did a mix of colonizing and map painting in order to create the current "nation" states there. The thing that is in the muslim psychi to do is go and try to be the empire that forms out of that. The problem is that there is a reason empires don't form any more (mordern military equipment.
Iran didn't have this problem, being an empire that transitioned into a nation state like the rest of us. currently even if it isn't a "modern" country, that is more due to political, economic and geographical isolation from europe.
Afghanistan is a backwater because no matter what religion is held there it's geography just makes it a backwater.
Africa is a way more complex, just becuase it's got so much of it's own shit going on. I have no idea
