This shit was pointed out by Ivan Illich back in the 70's. We've known for a long time that pouring money on this problem has no effect. The west needs a return to teaching using the classical education methods. Once kids have a grasp of how thinking works, they tend to do much better at everything else. Memory training is also important. You spend 10 years in school, give or take. It's a waste of time if you just forget whatever you learnt. Too many schools just fire reams of information at kids and expect them to either memorize it or not. As if recall was a natural gift some have and some don't and don't bother teaching any methods for memorisation because it's just a lucky dip. It won't solve all the problems, but it sure would stop the west from sliding into retarded 2nd/3rd world mode.

Edfag here. There are definite trade offs, but there are quite a few teacher led curriculums in this country that are objectively inferior to a cheap android tablet with courseware on it.
I actually expect them to do a better job than the fuckheads at the department of education, and the like. Duolingo for example was a massive breakthrough in courseware. Did you know they launched Common Core without testing to make sure it was effective? And they do shit like this ALL the fucking time.
So what they do instead, is that they loot the school budget and use it for general social welfare programs. Like the shit coming down the pipeline to make community college parking lots into homeless shelters.
