Look what they did to the new Settlers game. They literally have no idea how to put women into the game, so they place them into male positions.

Played it again for a while last year, and I'd change some design stuff for a new version. Some of the micromanagement becomes tedious after a while, for example that you manually have to tell your villagers that they are allowed to marry. Seemed like a good idea, to give the player full control over everything, but some of it just becomes a boring waste of time after a while.

In some sense Funatics made a reboot. For years they scraped by with a crappy web game, then last year or the year before that they produced a 3d rts together with Maxxis which is a dumbed down version of Cultures, same Viking scenario and many identical mechanics. Name is Valhalla I think. The game is rather mediocre, though, and gets old very fast.

Yeah, Valhalla Hills is ugly as fuck. And gameplay doesn't look promising at all.

Well, it had A* which is still the most relevant pathfinding algorithm. Getting rid of the hex grid would be nice, I don't recall if Valhalla still has it, or if you can build freely on the map.

The graphics didn't bother me that much, they are okay. Keep in mind that Funatics is a relatively small indie studio. But the gameplay was boring. I've played the first 2-3 maps/levels, and they felt all the same, too repetitive and no real progression.

Graphics do matter. Cultures had an absolutely comfy art-style. I think it's because 2D games are drawn, while 3D games always have some sort of texture stretching. And 2D animations just feel more natural than 3D animations.
Cultures really catched that european comfy feel with beautiful idyllic nature. Lots of strong colors, like green. It just felt really organic and comfy.

With Cultures, we had some experienced sprited artists in the team, and it shows. Funatics simply doesn't have good 3d artists. I've stalked them a bit over the years since I'm a former employee, and a while before they started with Valhalla they were desperately looking for a 3d artists who was also experienced with rigging/animating, since at that point they only had one guy who could make models, but not animate.

Creating a 3d game which doesn't look cheap requires some work, and experience.

idk how good settlers will be - but the art style is nice..
too bad they know how dumb the consumer is, that based off the art style alone, in many cases, someone will buy it..
mechanics are being dumbed down and streamlined, because a learning curve turns off newer players.
In a way this is good, but in a way it is also bad and annoying for strategy gamers that like a challenge

settlers includes feminism and aoe is just an rts, not a building game with comfy graphics.
