Wörks just as intended I'd say. Ever watched bacteria grow in a flask of LB broth? You start by seeding about a liter of that stuff with a tiny agar stab colony and put them at comfy 37 °C on the shaker. Within about an hour they will start to rapidly multiply and grow exponentially. The broth will become ever more cloudy from the myriad bacteria happily reproducing. But at one point, after a few hours, you will suddenly recognize a drop in growth rate. This is when the colony has reached saturation point. Now let the game continue and the little fuckers will start to absorb most nutrients in the broth while at the same time acidifying it with their metabolic products to the point of acute toxicity. Mass death of most bacteria in the saturated colony follows until you end up with nothing but an ugly, stinking solution of acidic cell debris. Still, there is always just a few bacteria that survive beyond that point, going into some form of hibernation ... and once conditions get better ... the game starts anew.
