the polls were largely accurate in 2016 because its impossible to account for voters who had never voted prior to that election. for all intents and purposes we can say those votes could go either way. trump won 3 states by a margin of under 1% of their state vote which is a reasonable margin of error. those 3 states were what won him the election. there was a very very small chance he would win those states and he ended up winning them which is why he had a lower chance than clinton in the polls, but still a reasonable chance.
