In my experience visiting the South, they don't really look different from British Islanders and the Irish, although if they do have distinctive appearances, that may be the result of other admixtures, such as Native American or Black African descent.

1. Celtic ancestry, the celts aren't really closely related to other Europeans except for the basque who are mostly Latin at this point.
2. Lower standard of living, this can be something as simple as outside work changing skin tone to lack of teeth changing face shape.
3. Cultural norms, in some places in Europe things like smiling are discouraged while in the south it's considered a curtesy this and other facial ticks also affects the way people look in general as it alters facial muscles and skin over time.
