Monopoly is unironically one of the worst boardgames ever made. It's almost completely dependand on dicerolls, the player has no agency, making the core act of playing very boring. On top of that, it takes forever to finish and is very tedious, yet at the same time the winners and losers are often almost set in stone very early depending on your rolls and properties. So you constantly have situations where everyone knows the 1-2 people with the chance to win after like 20 minutes, but you still have to go through the motions for like 2 hours of everyone lazily rolling dice and being bored to actually get there. And it's so obvious this game sucks, too. That's why everyone has their own little house rules to make it more interesting. Stuff like fines go to free parking and whoever lands on it gets the money break up the monotony and at the very least give the illusion of a possible comeback. And it's also the reason why Hasbro is just pumping out meme versions as opposed to something like an updated, classic one - they know nobody likes to play their game, they've just been conditioned to think they have to have a version of Monopoly in their household.
I blame the unlikely rise to prominence of Monopoly in the US as one of the major reason boardgames never took off over there the way they did in Europe.
