The same happened to me, but as an adult.
I'd been suffering with depression for years on and off so the doc put me on zoloft.
I took them for a while, they did help me get out of the pit of depression but then the zombieness set in and everything about the world felt fake.
So I stopped taking them as soon as I could.

The thing is, depression was only a symptom of an underlying issue.
It was only after several years of internal reflection that I realised that the reason I was depressed was that I was and bored of my life.

The reason I bored was because I didn't have a job or things in my life that challenged me, but the reason I didn't have challenging things is because I always felt stressed so I didn't feel like I could take on more.

But the reason I felt stressed wasn't the pressure of the job and expectations, but instead a general feeling of constant anxiety.
The reason for the anxiety was having really bad self esteem issues.

And after realising the true root cause of my issues I've been able to take a path of self improvement.
A very hard path and still a ways to go, plenty of setbacks and wrong turns, but every day I feel more balanced in my mindset and feel like I can do more and I'm more comfortable with my short comings.

It's bloody hard and a lot of time investment... so no wonder the docs throw you a packet of pills and send you on your way.

I actually know the answer to this, memes aside. It was the subject of research for my PhD.

Obviously like everything there's not one big cause. But historical data supports the notion that ASD itself is not on the rise but the diagnosis of it is. A burger poster earlier talking about bugs had it almost correct.

ASD is a developmental disorder where some parts of your brain do not develop at the same speed as others. This tends to affect neurological tasks that we define as "social interaction" but it's actually a bit wider than that. People with ASD literally think differently from people without it due to the way their brain has compensated to the lack of development in certain areas. It's a spectrum and every brain works differently but research shows that people with ASD tend to be extremely good at evaluating all outcomes of a situation, for example.

Anyway, the reason it is on the rise diagnostically is that social media and social interaction has become a much more important part of our society, and people with ASD have started to stick out more as their disability excludes them from more tasks.

For example, let's say you lived in Europe in the 1600s. You probably lived in a small village of 100 people. You knew all of these people and when you became very interested in plants for example, it was a skill utilised by the community. ASD back then was a competitive advantage.

Because we have working healthcare systems that diagnose it.

I use to like lighthouses when I was a kid, I live in an area with a ton of them. My Mom was convinced I was autistic because I liked them, she took me to a doctor to get diagnosed, but instead they diagnosed me with ADD since there was no other evidence of autism. I grew out of that interest, but I liked them because I use to like being really high and looking out over the land and climbing up lots of stairs. My Dad refused to have me medicated, for that I am forever grateful, and when I was in middle school my diagnosis was revoked because I “grew out of it”

As an high functioning autistic myself who recently finished nursing school. I just get easily agitated when I see too many normal fags at once or when my very close pals who introduce me to too many of their normal fag friends. I can't stand the smell or sight of smoking and get very agitated at second hand smoking. The smell of weeb and drugs enrages me and can't bare to be around those users for any second longer.
I've been deceived many times by normal fags to things that were not moral right. If I ever realized that the act of what normal fags wanted me to do was wrong and I tried to walk away from it, normal fags would just find me boring and move out. I talk to myself way too much, have a bunch of ideas but never ever express myself coherently to normal fags to understand the first time. I have long periods of day dreaming. My dreams have continuous in plot and has a complex development of characters, countries, cultures, adventures, politics, wars and villains. Reality has gotten too boring and I'm no longer interested in the red pill anymore. There's no point with putting up with normal fags and their bullshit anymore. All the guys around my age just want to party, do drugs, have promiscuous sex, race, listen to trap and nig pop. I haven't killed myself yet because of my day dreaming and waiting for sex robots to come out.
I notice how high functioning autistic girls have life easier than HFA boys because HFA girls rely on group thinking bullshit from their normal fags gfs to survive and be seen socially normal. Also guys are So desperate to just fuck any women as long as it fixes their self-esteem. HFA women are never as lonely as HFA men.
One thing that normal fags tell me to do alot is smile or laugh, may it's because of my chronic depression that I rarely show signs of happiness around people or my family relatives. I didn't show signs of happiness during my graduation and even my principal and director told me to smile.
