All those older ones, the Rosatom reactors and the General Electric Mk. I and Mk. II, they all generate power by driving steam turbines. The heat to create steam comes from the radioactive decay in the fuel rods. The atoms of metal in them are "unbalanced" in laymans terms, so they basically bleed energy in the form of radiation until they decay into a more stable form of matter.

The rods they use constantly increase in temperature due to the radioactive decay going on in them, so they have to be constantly cooled, even after they are spent they need to sit in a cooling pool or go into a special dry cask that will prevent them from melting themselves.

There's a catch though, you know when you drip water on a hot grill and it just skips across the surface? That is because the grill is hotter than what is called the Leidenfrost point, if the fuel rod gets higher than the Leidenfrost point, then it is impossible for water to remain in contact with the surface of the rod, even if the rod is totally submerged in water. Once a fuel rod gets past this temperature, the water cannot cool the rod anymore and the rod continues to get hotter until it reaches the temperature at which it melts, or in chernoblys case with fresh fuel rods, gets hot enough to burst into a radiological fire. Radiological fire occurs when the atoms of an object continue to rise in temperature due to not being cooled, they just get hotter and hotter until they can vaporize cement. Atoms in this state do not like to stay close to each other and the result is a short, white hot radioactive inferno.

Chernobly had a pressurized reactor vessel to raise the Leidenfrost point, as in pressure increases the temperature of the Leidenfrost point, as well as the phase change temperature to steam. When the vessel lost pressure, all of the water in it, which was under high pressure and at a temperature way over 100c, instantly phase changed into steam.

In the recent HBO miniseries they depicted the reactor as "open." I thought I heard/read that if they had just covered them with pic related type casings then the explosion's nuclear fallout would have been minor.

Open is a very relative term when you are dealing with a reactor that can pump out 4 megawatts. It was inside of a heavy steel pressure vessel to begin with. Building a dome like that would have been an admission of how flawed the design really was. They only got those things build with assurances a dome like that would never be necessary.

The G.E. reactors were not safe either, several engineers went on strike when the company said they were going to start building them, and the Russians basically just copied a shitty design that Americans weren't even 100% sure about.

The real issue with Chernobyl was the shitty control systems and protocols that the people at the plant were following. A prime example of typical Slav incompetence. When engineers in western countries build stuff like that, they design the control systems and protocols so that they have a kind of mathematical proof some idiotic accident like that will never occur. They actually do really in depth mathematical analyses. They miss things sometimes, like with the recent Boeing autopilot thing, but it's rare.

Basically it was Russian Homer Simpsons fault.
