About a year ago a new guy started working in our office. On his first day he brought in his own light bulbs because he said LEDs looked like garbage. When our boss heard about it he went into the new guy's office after he had left for the day and changed the light bulbs back to LEDs and told us he wouldn't even notice. The next day the new guy flipped on the light and immediately asked who changed his lights. It took him less than 2 seconds to tell the light wasn't incandescent. Once you notice the difference you can't ignore it, the light put off by LEDs looks cheap like the lighting on a soap opera set.
Power plants have to generate enough power to meet peak usage at all times in order to avoid unexpected surges in consumption causing brownouts. The amount of energy consumed by lights, and the unpredictability of when lights will be on or off, means light bulbs don't have any effect on the amount of power generated. Energy efficient refrigerators, water heaters, windows, insulation, and HVAC systems are the best way to reduce peak power consumption. Light bulbs simply don't affect the peak.
