It's complicated. I think most of this died out after the mid 2000's, and we've actually been able to communicate more freely. The French have always been bad about this, but the Fench don't like anyone. Then there's the circles you encounter people in. Commie Americans are probably just as annoying as commie Europeans. For my part, I get along with white Britons just fine, you just have to be able to take critiques because that's how they are. They put as much under a microscope as possible (and maybe why they seem to have a quicker wit). If you listen long enough, they'll get around to saying that they pretty much like us generally, and from what I've gathered, that, that we go out of our way to be friendly.

Also, if it's one thing Europeans don't understand about us, it's that we've developed a cultural sensitivity to being liked and well thought of. A lot of us think that we're a kind of "take no shit, don't care" types, but I think that only applies to people we don't see as peers, like spics. It's also why we take strong offense at even little slights. They don't really get that we don't get that on a dat to day basis, criticisms translate into insults and personal disliking that lowers our standing.

My great uncle (grandfather's brother) fought in Italy in 1944. His hatred for Americans came from his experience dealing with them over there during WW2. They rolled up after Canadian/Commonwealth forces did the grunt work then took all the credit. All those hollywood movies about 'ra-ra America!' b.s. riled him up.

An unrelated story about my grandfather, he fought in the navy and their ship recused germans from a sunk ship in the north Atlantic and my grandfather was tasked with pointing a pistol at them while they peeled potatoes for their dinner meal. He told me he was conditioned to hate germans like they were dirty rats until he sat on a stool and watched those teenage-early 20-something peeling potatoes speaking german and joking with each other just the same as a Canadian would. His whole perspective on the war changed with that. WW2 was a mistake, and I admire Quebecois for essentially boycotting participating in it and fighting conscription; they were right all along.
