My mother is on a few government assistance programs because she has a disability. I would highly not recommend doing so if you don't actually need it. The stress from all of the eligibility reviews, housing inspections (if on section 8), and so on aren't worth it unless you have no other means of making money.

Just save to pay your taxes. Make sure you owe the government money every year in taxes. If you’re getting a tax return you’re giving the government an interest free loan for a year. If you owe them money they are being put on a diet. Politicians on a diet, especially democrats, will cut welfare programs first. Problem solved and you’re still not being a beggar.

It's this simple: Just have kids first, then go to social services and they will set you up. You can research the potential benefits first though, but they will literally fill out forms for you and guide you through it because government workers want to protect their job security.
They want you on welfare and they will bend over backwards to help you get into that.
