Most Gen Z kids I went to school with, especially the ones born after 9/11, have been exposed to the California way of handling things.
I didn't realize it was like that until I had moved to another state.
Essentially, everyone's aware in a Huxley-style way of the institutions being bullshit, the teachers simultaneously abused and abusive, the curriculum biased when it isn't incompetent, the food terrible when it isn't inedible, and the masks we put on every day of smiles and sunshine just to avoid whatever more overt predator will gladly use as an excuse to harm us.
It teaches very early on what many adults don't take well - the entire system that was promised to give you a better future and life, is only meant to control how you think, who you are, what you do, and when you do it.
Nobody cares. And now, if you want, you get to live with that. Otherwise, everyone will gladly look the other way while you kill yourself, and since you're dead you can't hurt them for virtue signalling your corpse afterward.
That is the reality a lot of kids in California faced for the better part of 4 decades. Gen Z faces the same the whole nation over, now.
The problem though is that they haven't made outside the institutions as miserable or worse than being in them. So you have your ones and twos that figure out enough, get fed up with enough, and do something about it.
