The Tibetans always held themselves apart, and Tibetan buddhism to this day contains some great stuff. It reminds me a lot of the better parts of medieval Catholicism, including the willingness to adjust the cosmology bits of their dogma to new scientific evidence while standing firm on the morality. If you're looking for a good path into meditation/mindfulness, I prefer the Tibetan stuff over Zen.
