I've often heard the stereotype that gay men have fractious relationships with their mothers, either being too close, mummy's-boy types, or having cold, distant and cruel mothers who essentially ruined their attraction to women. Have there ever been any studies done on this subject or is it too controversial for modern researchers to touch? Also, has anyone here seen this stereotype at play and if so what did you think was happening psychologically?

I recently heard an argument at Uni that periods of separation from the mother (e.g. boarding schools in the past) were an important part of an man's development. I think the argument involved over-doting being common of mothers, which takes away from man having to learn hardship.
