Westerners in general though, and not just the white ones, are alienated from the production process of their food.

Well religion is a product of culture which is a product of genetics. I'd say that's at least somewhat innate. It's also not only cows, they respect most all animals.

Even IF that were somehow true, it is irrelevant. OP asked about "caring for" animals, not strictly pet ownership. The poos literally worship cows and rats, a huge percentage of the population is vegetarian. They are, on average, very animal friendly.
