I used to work with vending machines, id regularly deposit hundreds in rolled quarters to the bank. Theyd just take them and weigh then and that was it. $800 in quarters is nothing

Why burden a bank teller with your coins? When I fill up my coin jar I just take it to the machine by my bank and it counts it for me. Then I take the slip to the teller and boom done. They don't charge you anything.

Unless you go to the 'business account' line at certain banks, they don't have facilities to handle unrolled loose coins. And hand-counting them is a waste of their time.

I don't know of _ANY_ bank that would hold up a line for a pile o' coins like that... unless they have a coin sorter/counter handy.

It wasn't even quarters. I had a shoe box 3/4 full of different coins, all the lose change I saved for maybe 4 years. What they do they give you plastic bags to put them in, you seal it, sign it, fill up some form. They send it to their main facility to count and within a weak it's deposited into your account.

There's no fee if you get a gift card. In most places you can redeem gift card for cash or resell, so it's just an extra step. If you're going to use the money for one of the cards available then it's even easier. Used to also be free (coinstar) if you got a scrip to use at the supermarket you were in.

Use to work in a bank and this is common now. Reason is simple, they have no way of getting rid of so many coins. Sure the money might just be a number in someones bank account, but the actual physical coins? They'll never get rid of those without losing money in the process.
